Wood Bed and Sandpaper Leaves copyright
1998-1999
With this installation, I used wholly recycled materials.  The wood came from a scrap bin.  It was mostly the kind of
pine boards used on construction sites.  The leaves were recycled from the sandpaper I used to sand the bed.  For
me the piece conveys a feeling of craftsmanship, using materials that the average construction worker might use.   I
also wanted to create an initial feeling of comfort while using hard or coarse materials that suggest the opposite.  The
bed was only big enough for a child.  I think it was meant for me at 10 years old.
Video footage of the installation
The installation was shown at a student gallery at York University, Toronto, Canada.

The bed reminded me of my Grandfather who was a craftsman who loved to work with wood.
He was an Elder in the United Church, so I wanted to create a finish that reminded me of the

Hours and hours of sanding and a dark stain brought out the grain of the wood.
