Hammer Swinger Project (Witch Hunt), marker on sheet metal, rope, metal bars, pully, copyright 1998, York University
Sculpture Studio Show, Toronto, Canada.
This is an installation I where i took an object - a hammer and went to the computer and looked up all the references to
a hammer I could find. There were a lot of interesting meanings associated to the object like the ridiculous rantings of
Malefica Maleorum or "The Hammer of the Witches". This was the doctrine from the middle ages used by the Catholic
Church to persecute and execute countless innocent people who were believed to practice witchcraft. It was the
original witch hunt. I also used an equation that was used to calculate the force of a water hammer for a pump or
something. Also, I inserted text in the installation from the handbook on Olympic Hammer Throwing, especially about
the great Olympian Hammer Thrower 'Bondarchuk'. Including a graph of his stance. Also there were drawings of
Thors Hammer, and of course a selection of hammers presented on a small stool. I raised the "room" of sheet metal
off the floor because of the witchcraft meaning associated with the object.

The metal walls I hung about a foot off the floor from an overhead frame and pully. I wanted to create a feeling of the room magically floating in
the air.
"The Witches deserve the heaviest punishment.." and
"Advice to Novice Hammerthrowers..."
"Acceleration of Bondarchuk" (a famous Olympian Hammerthrower)
